The old nature vs the new nature in Christ

Many people spend their lives trying to become a better person. They change habits, improve their morals, become religious, or turn over a new leaf. But the Bible reveals a truth that many overlook:

God did not send Jesus Christ to improve the old man. He came to give you a new life.

The greatest problem facing the world is not politics, education, or society—it is the sinful nature of man. Until that problem is solved, no amount of self-improvement can produce true righteousness before God.

The Old Man vs. The New Man

The Foundation — Every Person Is Born With the Old Nature

The Bible teaches that every person enters this world with a sinful nature inherited from Adam.

"Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and thus death spread to all men..."

Romans 5:12

That is why people naturally choose sin over righteousness.

The old man is not merely bad habits.

It represents the sinful manner of life that characterizes humanity apart from Christ.

Paul describes it this way:

"That you put off concerning the former conduct, the old man, which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;"

— Ephesians 4:22

The old man cannot produce a life that pleases God.

The New Man Is God's New Creation

When a person believes the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God does something religion can never accomplish.

He makes that person a new creature.

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

— 2 Corinthians 5:17

Paul continues:

"And that you put on the new man, which was created according to God, in true righteousness and true holiness."

— Ephesians 4:24

The new man is not a repaired version of the old man.

It is God's new creation in Christ.

Be Renewed in the Spirit of Your Mind

Between putting off the old man and putting on the new man, Paul gives an important command:

"And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;"

— Ephesians 4:23

Why?

Because although believers have received a new identity in Christ, they are called to grow by allowing God's Word to shape their thinking and daily walk.

The Christian life is not lived by human determination alone.

It is lived as believers learn, obey, and grow through the truth of God's Word.

Renewing the mind changes how we think, which influences how we live.

The Difference Between Salvation and the Christian Walk

This distinction is essential.

Salvation is not earned by putting off the old man or putting on the new man.

Those instructions are written to people who are already believers.

Paul addresses them as those who have learned Christ (Ephesians 4:20–21).

In other words:

The new birth is God's work.

The renewed walk is the believer's response.

We do not walk differently to become saved.

We walk differently because we have been saved.

Good works are the fruit of salvation, never the root of salvation.

The Conclusion — Which Life Describes You?

Every day, the world encourages people to follow the desires of the old nature.

God calls His children to walk according to the new life they have received in Christ.

The question is not whether you attend church or try to be a good person.

The question is:

Have you ever become a new creature in Christ?

Without the new birth, the old man remains under the condemnation of sin.

Only Jesus Christ can give the new life that no religion can produce.

The Gospel — God's Gift of New Life

You cannot save yourself by trying harder.

You cannot erase your sins by good works.

You cannot become the new man through religion.

That is why Jesus Christ came.

The Apostle Paul declared the Gospel by which we are saved:

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel...

How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."

— 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

Jesus Christ died for your sins.

He was buried.

He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

During this present Church Age, salvation is the free gift of God, received by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ—not by works, religious rituals, or self-improvement.

You don't need a better version of the old man.

You need the new life that only Jesus Christ can give.

Believe the Gospel today, trust in the finished work of Christ alone, and receive the gift of eternal life before it is too late.
