The dangers & risks of feeding Bovaer to cattle

They claim feeding Chemical additives to cows is safe......., but what goes into food, goes into the digestive system, goes into the blood stream of the animal, which in turn goes as result into meat & milk. Authorities claim that is broken down before it actually goes into the meat & milk.
I am sorry but if this is stated by certain authorities, I have a tendency to believe the opposite lately. (Remember Covid?)

What is Bovaer?
Bovaer, is a methane-reducing cattle feed additive whose active chemical ingredient is 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP). In Australia, Bovaer is approved for commercial use and has been integrated by certain beef producers (such as suppliers for Coles' "carbon-neutral" beef line), though its adoption in the Australian dairy industry remains limited due to cost and logistics.
While regulatory bodies like Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) maintain that Bovaer is safe for cattle and human consumers, the additive has sparked considerable controversy regarding health and handling risks.
1. Risks to Human Handlers (The Primary Regulatory Warning)
The most concrete, scientifically backed safety warnings regarding Bovaer do not apply to the cattle or the consumers eating the meat, but rather to the farm workers who handle the raw powder. In its concentrated form, the active ingredient 3-NOP poses the following risks:
· Skin and Eye Irritation: It is classified as corrosive to the eyes and irritating to the skin upon direct contact.
· Inhalation Hazard: It can be harmful if the dust is inhaled during the mixing process.
· Reproductive Toxicity at High Doses: Laboratory studies on rats using massive, concentrated doses (far beyond what a human would naturally encounter) indicated potential impacts on male fertility. Because of this, agricultural workers are strictly advised to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and goggles, when handling the product.

On paper and in over 70 peer-reviewed trials, a quarter-teaspoon daily dose of Bovaer has been shown to safely break down in a cow's rumen within 30 minutes without adverse health effects. However, a major real-world backlash emerged following mandatory rollouts in Europe:
The Danish Controversy: In late 2025, after Denmark mandated the use of methane inhibitors for dairy herds, a subset of Danish farmers reported that their cows suffered from fevers, severe diarrhea, decreased appetite, drops in milk yield, and increased somatic cell counts (a sign of mastitis). Some isolated deaths were also alleged.
